The British overseas territory of Montserrat is located in the Lesser Antilles chain of the West Indies. The small Caribbean island is mountainous and because of its similarities to Ireland in both topography and inhabitants, it is called the "Emerald Isle of the Caribbean. The earliest inhabitants of the island were the Arawaks and later, the Saladoid people and the native Caribs occupied the island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Montserrat is one of the few countries with an active volcano that was previously dormant before erupting in 1995, causing massive destruction so much that some of the island's inhabitants leave the affected area of the island including the former capital Plymouth. Currently, the island has an "exclusion zone" where volcanic activity is high, and as such visitors are barred from reaching those unsafe areas even though the volcano has not erupted again since 2010. One-fifth of the island is forested with kush vegetation and there are a few beautiful coastal beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
