Colombia
Colombia is a great winter sun destination for not just October, but most of the year. The country’s location near the equator keeps it fairly warm throughout the year, with minimal temperature fluctuations between seasons.
What’s more, you’ll rarely experience any rain in October because it marks the end of the rainy season and the onset of the dry season. That means you can enjoy all kinds of outdoor fun, and it’s precisely why I think Colombia would be the perfect South American destination for anyone looking to enjoy some warmth without forgoing fun activities.
Even though most of the country is fairly warm and dry, climatic conditions may vary depending on the region and topography. To give you an idea of how much the climate can vary with location and topography, here are a few examples of the October weather conditions in some of the most popular and not-so-popular snowbird locations:
- The Caribbean coast. The Caribbean coast has some of the most popular snowbird destinations in Colombia, including Cartagena, Barranquilla, and Santa Marta. Expect hot and humid weather throughout October, with average temperatures of 25-30°C (77-86°F). Light rain is to be expected, but it won’t be frequent enough to get in the way of your fun.
- The Andean region. Popular snowbird destinations in this region include the cities of Cali, Medellin, and Bogota. This region is a bit cooler than the Caribbean coast in October, with temperatures of 10-20°C (50-68°F). The good news is that October is generally a dry month in these cities.
- The Amazon region. The cold isn’t a problem in the Amazon region because it stays fairly warm throughout the year. However, it’s one of the wettest and most humid parts of Colombia in October. So while you may appreciate the warm temperatures with lows of 22°C (72°F) and highs of 32°C(90°F), you won’t get to enjoy all the beautiful scenery and fun activities this part of Colombia has to offer if your visit in October.
As you can see, climate conditions may vary drastically depending on which part of the country you visit. This is the norm, and it doesn’t take away from the fact that Colombia is a great place to enjoy some winter sun. Even the warmest countries in October have colder regions that anyone looking to avoid the cold should steer clear of.
Great weather isn’t the only reason I think Colombia would be the perfect destination for winter visitors, particularly snowbirds and 50+ travelers in October.
Here are a couple more:
Historical Attractions
Colombia is home to many historical attractions. However, some may not be accessible during October because they’re located in parts of the country with no-so-good weather at this time of the year. For purposes of today’s discussion, I’ll only focus on the ones you can visit in October without having to put up with unpleasant weather.
Colombia’s must-see historical attractions in October include:
- Cartagena's Old Town. Found on the Caribbean coast, this town is featured on the World Heritage List and has all kinds of historical landmarks. Some noteworthy mentions include the Cathedral of Cartagena, The Palace of Inquisition, and the San Felipe Castle.
- The Gold Museum. This is one of Bogota’s many historical attractions. It houses the world’s largest collections of Pre-Columbian gold artifacts, making it a great place to learn about the artistry, culture, and craftsmanship of the country’s indigenous people.
- San Agustín Archaeological Park. Located in the Andean Region, this UNESCO World Heritage Site showcases South America’s largest collection of megalithic sculptures and religious monuments. These structures are believed to be dated back to the 1st century, making this spectacular landscape arguably the best spot to catch a glimpse of the ancient northern Andean culture, religion, and craftsmanship.
Other noteworthy mentions include The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá and La Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino. The former is an underground church carved out of a salt mine located about 49 km (30 miles) north of Bogotá, while the latter is a historic estate-turned-museum located in the Caribbean region.

Colombia has countless beaches that you can visit in October. Here are my top 5 recommendations for where to find great beaches in October, along with what I liked most about them:

Low Cost of Living
Colombia is one of the cheapest countries to live in South America. It’s cheaper than other popular South American destinations, such as Brazil, Ecuador, and Chile.
According to Word Data estimates, Colombia has a cost index of 41.6. That means everyday expenses in the country are 58.4% cheaper compared to the USA. I’ve been there, and these numbers check out. While there are some expensive places, you’ll almost always pay less for products or services than you would in the US.
Endless Opportunities for Fun Activities
Colombia has more opportunities for fun and adventure than I can cover in this post. From scenic places to diverse cuisines, there’s something for everyone.
What I liked most about visiting in October is that several festivals are held around this time. Here are a few I wouldn’t recommend sitting out:
- Cartagena International Film Festival
- Cocora Valley Festival
- National Bandola Festival
Belize
Belize may be a lesser-known winter sun destination, but it’s a great choice for individuals who prefer to enjoy some winter sun without traveling too far south. This small country is mostly known for the 4,000-4,600 years old Mayan ruins, but it’s also home to many other tourist attractions, such as:
- Stunning beaches.
- Coral reefs and diverse marine life.
- Rivers that run through caves, allowing visitors to enjoy a unique experience known as cave tubing.
- Beautiful islands that allow visitors to enjoy island hopping.
- Diverse wildlife, including jaguars and tapirs.
- Chocolate farms, where people can learn interesting facts about the chocolate-making process.
The beauty of visiting Belize in October is that this time of the year falls between the peak and off seasons for tourism. That means it won’t be as crowded as other months, and you can bag great deals on accommodation, travel arrangements, and fun activities. Even if you don’t get discounts, you’ll likely enjoy some seclusion in the most popular tourist attractions.
What’s more, October has great weather for laid-back outdoor fun. Temperature highs average at 30°C (86°F), while lows tend to be at about 24°C (75°F). Occasional showers are to be expected, but most of the country still sees at least 7 hours of sunshine daily.
Mexico
Mexico is another great location for anyone looking to avoid the cold without traveling too far south. Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, in particular, are great locations because they’re usually less crowded in October.
Most parts of Mexico are warm and sunny throughout October. Some parts of the country experience occasional showers at this time of the year. Still, the two cities I mentioned earlier usually see less rain than the likes of Mexico City and Oaxaca.
Another great thing about visiting Mexico in October is that it’s less crowded during this period. This time of the year falls between the peak and off seasons, meaning you can enjoy the country’s warm weather without annoying crowds and probably get better deals on accommodation, transportation, and other travel essentials.
How this Top 3 list was made
The top 3 list was derived from a survey where we asked about their top destination for a particular month and region. From these results, we made each month a top 3 for North America, the Caribbean, Middle/South America, Europe, and Asia (including the Middle East). Sometimes, we have combined several individual destinations from a single country into the country itself.
